Phila. Students Send School Supplies to Katrina Evacuees
September 22, 2005 KYW 1060 Radio, September 16, 2005 Dozens of boxes filled with school supplies are heading to Louisiana to help Katrina evacuees get back on their feet. Students at the New Foundations Charter School in Philadelphia's Holmesburg section filled 60 backpacks with school supplies they brought in. Chris Kirn donated a bunch of stuff. "I brought in a bookbag, pencils, erasers, hair gel, shampoo, combs." Kristie Laychoch went to the store and picked up things she'd like: "I figured they needed school-related items and items to take care of themselves with, so I just brought them in." Principal Paul Stadelberger likes the idea of giving things instead of cash: "A lot of times, when you send a nickel, or a dime, or a dollar you don't know where it goes or what it's done." He says the students can understand the need for pencils and folders because they use them every day. « Return to the Listing of Articles |
