Service LearninG
Below are documents to help you learn more about our training center's programs and services: What is Service Learning? A method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service. Collecting books for a library is a SERVICE. Learning the writing process and parts of a book is LEARNING. Students who learn about the importance of literacy, through writing and publishing children’s books for a local library is SERVICE LEARNING. At New Foundations Charter School Service Learning happens as part of a class… Students in 5th grade studied the culture and geography of Brazil. Working together they created Brazilian crafts and foods to sell to students at NFCS. All the money they raised was used to purchase land in the Rainforest in Brazil. Service Learning happens as an extra-curricular activity… 7th and 8th grade students serve as conflict managers to the NFCS school community. Working as a team they address school wide issues such as getting along and violence prevention, and help students through peer-conflicts. Service Learning happens after-school… 2nd to 4th grade students learn how to sew using a needle and thread, and how to crochet. Together they create blankets for babies at Children’s hospital, and offer their sewing abilities to the teachers and students at NFCS. Service Learning brings new opportunities to NFCS… Students have traveled for the past 5 years to attend the National Service Learning Conference in Minneapolis, Orlando, Long Beach, downtown Philadelphia, and Albuquerque. They serve as workshop leaders, film makers, service projects and youth conference leaders. Alumni stay involved at NFCS through by becoming junior staff, joining the Summer Career Exploration Program, and Project Ignition safe driving campaign. How can parents and the community be involved in Service Learning? Always keep an eye out for possible partnerships for your students classroom! Let the teachers know if you see a need that the students can help meet. Volunteer to help a teacher coordinate a project. Call Shira Woolf Cohen to find out how you can be involved!! 215-624-8100 x2310
