Caring School Community
The Caring School Community (CSC) program creates a climate of caring at school by deepening the connections among students, teachers, other adults in the school, and families. The multi-component program is flexible as well as practical. Studies have shown that the most effective classrooms and schools are those with a strong sense of “community” — where children feel they have some influence or control over their behavior and where others care about and are responsive to their needs. Students in “high community” schools are more likely to: like school achieve better academically trust and respect their teachers enjoy challenging learning activities be concerned about and help others resolve conflicts without force The Caring School Community program builds a caring community using the following complementary components: Class Meeting Class meetings provide teachers and students with a forum to get to know one another, establish classroom norms, discuss issues, identify and solve problems, and make decisions that affect classroom climate. Homeside Activities Short activities that students do with a family member foster communication at home—and link school learning with home experiences and perspectives. Cross-Age Buddies A “Buddies” program that pairs whole classes of older and younger students for academic and recreational activities helps to build caring cross-age relationships. School-wide Community-Building Activities Non-competitive school-wide activities link students, parents, teachers, and other adults in the school; help foster new school traditions; and promote helpfulness, inclusiveness, and responsibility.
