Benefiting the badge with a bracelet
April 20, 2009 The students and staff at New Foundations Charter School are well on their way to raising a couple thousand dollars for the Police Survivors Fund. The fund, administered by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, benefits the families of police officers killed in the line of duty. The kindergarten teachers at the school, at 8001 Torresdale Ave., in Holmesburg, spearheaded the fund-raising effort. They ordered 500 blue plastic bracelets that read, "I support Philly cops." Faculty and students bought all 500 bracelets for $3 each, and the teachers have ordered another 500. Many of them have been purchased in advance. The school plans to donate the money to the FOP at its annual Police Survivors Fund benefit, scheduled for May 16 at Finnigan's Wake. Last week, the school decided to honor officers from the 8th Police District and the Police Academy, along with the parents of students who are police officers. In all, 37 parents are officers, and they were given T-shirts with all their names printed on the back and the words "NFCS supports our caring cops." The goody bag also included a candle, a pin and letters of appreciation from students. The officers and their children were also treated to breakfast. Each classroom created a display that featured pictures, drawings, letters and notes of thanks for police officers. New Foundations was able to fete the officers with donations from Al's Corner Deli, Holmesburg Bakery, Dining Car, Uniform Gear, the Chick-Fil-A on Roosevelt Boulevard and the Hallmark store on Cottman Avenue.< br> « Return to the Listing of Articles |
