Phila. School Raises Money For Heart Association
February 11, 2009 PHILADELPHIA (CBS 3) ? It's National Wear Red Day to raise awareness about women and heart disease. And Friday, one Philadelphia school had its own kind of red celebration. Hundreds of students and staff at Philadelphia's New Foundations Charter School are taking National Wear Red Day to heart trying to raise money for the American Heart Association. These students are jumping for stronger hearts. "We want to keep our hearts healthy," said Adriana North, a kindergartener. And wearing red to raise awareness and money to fight the number one killer of women, heart disease. "I think it's a good day," said Joelle Hill, an eighth grader. "It's very important because we want like all people and children all over the world to have healthy hearts just like us," said Jonetta Miller, an eighth grader. "To help save a life," said Gabrielle Naselli, a second grader. The kids paid a dollar to dress down and sport their red. The money they raised will help people like their art teacher Patricia Gamble. She was diagnosed with congestive heart failure just a few months ago. "Very dramatic shortness of breath. Swelling, lots of discomfort from swelling. And it interrupted my sleep," said Patricia. She has a laundry list of other heart problems including high cholesterol and an irregular and rapid heart rate. Patricia says seeing her students and school rally around the cause is very special. She hopes the children's parents may look at themselves and get their hearts checked. "Makes me feel good that people are, that people care about it and hopefully other people will benefit from it. And of course it makes me feel good inside," said Patricia. Today's jump roping is part of the American Heart Associations Jump Rope for Heart campaign. The goal is to get kids to keep their heart healthy and raise money for the cause. The school collected about $1,000.
