History and Mission

The mission of the New Foundations Charter School is to provide students with the academic, social, and emotional foundations and skills necessary to become high achieving, socially competent stewards of their communities. The founders of the New Foundations Charter School will ensure a commitment to lifelong learning and achievement of all our students by creating an atmosphere of caring that pervades every aspect of school life, and promotes attachment to and responsibility for all members of our school community.

Founded by Sheryl Perzel and Paul Stadelberger, New Foundations Charter School opened in 2000, serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Founded in 2000, NFCS has expanded to include additional classrooms in each grade, and in 2010 began its high school program. This expansion has included an additional three-story building at its Torresdale campus, and then concluded with a new campus to accommodate the ninth-twelfth grades.

A Letter from the CEO

Dear New Foundations Charter School Caring Community,

Welcome to our school. New Foundations Charter School began in 2000 by providing an excellent education to the children and families of the City of Philadelphia. We have developed an impressive reputation based on our strong mission of providing the students with the academic, social and emotional foundations and skills that have helped all our members of our community become high achieving and life-long students.

As you know, New Foundations Charter School is one of the best schools in the City of Philadelphia. Our PSSA and Keystone Assessment scores continue to remain above the School District Philadelphia and State averages. New Foundations Charter School also ranks as one of the top schools in the City of Philadelphia based on the School Performance Rankings used by the School District of Philadelphia.

It is because of the hard work of many people, including administrators, faculty, staff, students and especially parents that we have been able to accomplish these achievements. I want to thank everyone for his or her effort and support to make this happen.

The value of the New Foundations education goes beyond high test scores and exceptional academics. We work each day to provide opportunities for students to foster responsibility and ownership for their behavior. Our curriculum and programs ensure that our students become socially competent stewards of their community as well. We cultivate student’s growth as caring citizens in their classroom, school and neighborhood communities. Our students are continually striving to make a better society for themselves and others. We partner with our surrounding community in many ways including our nationally recognized service-learning program. These efforts are our way of engaging students in making their community a better place.

I wish you success this year and hope that you will continue to provide support and encouragement to everyone in our “caring community of learners”!

Mr. Paul Stadelberger
